NICJR has been working in Washington, DC since 2020, with support from the Public Welfare Foundation (PWF) and in partnership with DC government.

Most recently, in partnership with the DC Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), NICJR conducted a detailed analysis of gun violence in the District that was released in January 2024. This report, which was an update to a prior analysis completed in 2022, garnered numerous media reports

NICJR also previously published a Landscape Analysis of violence prevention efforts in DC in May 2021. In response to these efforts, the Mayor announced a new Promised People initiative to focus intensive intervention efforts on the people at highest risk of being involved in gun violence. The Washington Post later published an editorial praising the Promised People program and NICJR’s involvement.

In April 2022, the CJCC released a Violence Reduction Strategic Plan developed by NICJR. The Mayor’s office pledged to implement the plan with NICJR’s support, and the Washington Post covered the plan’s release.

NICJR also partnered with a violence reduction advocacy group, Peace for DC, to conduct a study calculating the direct costs of gun violence to DC taxpayers. The resulting report was highlighted in a Washington Post article and a local NBC profile.

Finally, with support from PWF, Microsoft, and the White House Community Violence Intervention Collaborative, NICJR has provided technical assistance, training, and subgrants to local community-based organizations (CBOs) in DC. NICJR has provided more than $250,000 to seven DC CBOs:
