In partnership with the DC Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), NICJR also conducted a detailed analysis of gun violence in the District that was released in January 2024. The report garnered numerous media reports. NICJR published a Landscape Analysis of violence prevention efforts in DC in May 2021.

In response to the study, the Mayor announced a new Promised People initiative to focus intensive intervention efforts on the people at highest risk of being involved in gun violence. In May 2022, the Washington Post published an editorial praising the Promised People program and NICJR’s involvement.

In April 2022, the CJCC released a Violence Reduction Strategic Plan developed by NICJR. The Mayor’s office has pledged to implement the plan with NICJR’s support. The Washington Post covered the plan’s release.

NICJR also partnered with a new violence reduction advocacy group, Peace for DC, to conduct a Cost of Gun Violence assessment, calculating the direct costs of gun violence to DC taxpayers. The report, which was also released in April 2022, was highlighted in a Washington Post article and a local NBC profile.

Finally, with support from PWF as well as the White House Community Violence Intervention Collaborative (CVIC), NICJR is providing technical assistance, training, and subgrants to local community-based organizations (CBOs) in DC. NICJR has provided more than $30,000 each to four DC CBOs:
