What is Community Violence Intervention (CVI)?
Community violence intervention (CVI) is an emerging approach that “uses evidence-informed strategies to reduce near-term violence through tailored community-centered initiatives. These multidisciplinary strategies intensively engage individuals and groups to prevent and disrupt cycles of violence and retaliation, and establish relationships between individuals and community assets to deliver services that save lives, address trauma, provide opportunity, and improve the physical, social, and economic conditions that drive violence. These strategies include street outreach, violence interruption, hospital-based violence intervention, life coaching, peace fellowships, cognitive behavioral therapy, and others.”
CVI Action Plan
NICJR is proud to serve as one of the lead organizations in the field that developed a comprehensive CVI Action Plan to grow, improve, and institutionalize CVI nationwide. Leveraging the insights of more than 300 CVI practitioners, researchers, and leaders, the Plan outlines recommendations for impact-driven investments to strengthen the field and establish CVI as a permanent fixture of public safety ecosystems nationwide.
Building CVI Ecosystems
Through training and technical assistance to offices of violence prevention and CAPS jurisdictions, NICJR also supports jurisdictions with understanding, coordinating, and scaling local community violence intervention ecosystems. A CVI ecosystem is a “comprehensive network with coordinated strategies, programs, and stakeholders working together to reduce violence within a community. A CVI ecosystem is designed to address the root causes of violence, intervene in imminent acts of violence, and provide comprehensive support to those affected.”
