Frequently Asked Questions about the NOVPN
An office of violence prevention (OVP) is a public safety agency dedicated to reducing violence by responding to the specific needs of its community and using a public health approach rather than one centered solely on law enforcement. Most OVPs focus primarily on firearm violence, the type of violence with the highest incidence in most US cities, though some offices also collaborate with other government agencies to address intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, and other forms of harm.
Membership is open to all offices of violence prevention (or similarly named agencies such as offices of neighborhood safety or community safety) within city, county, or state governments across the U.S. While the Network has many partners, community-based organizations, research institutions, and other training and technical assistance (TTA) providers are not eligible for membership.
The Network offers a wide range of learning and collaboration opportunities, including virtual and in-personal convenings at the national, regional, and state levels; trainings and presentations on effective violence reduction strategies; cross-OVP learning exchanges and site visits; and technical assistance focused on leadership and agency development.
Through both generalized and specialized training and technical assistance, NOVPN also helps OVPs build their capacity in areas such as data collection and reporting, fund development, and communications. Generalized TTA focuses on best practices across the field, and specialized TTA is customized to address the local context of a jurisdiction.
